MEC Mhlahlo calls police to assist the National Prosecuting
Authority

17 July 2007

Eastern Cape MEC for Safety, Liaison, Roads and Transport, Thobile Mhlahlo,
is calling upon all individuals in the Eastern Cape, who have information about
the assassination of political activists by apartheid security forces to come
forward and assist the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

MEC Mhlahlo's call is in response to the current investigation that is being
conducted by the NPA in connection with the killing of Pebco 3 and other
individuals in the Eastern Cape, especially in the Port Elizabeth, Cradock and
other areas, where most black political activists were abducted and
subsequently killed by apartheid security forces.

"In the light of the long unresolved cases of Pebco 3, Cradock 4, the death
of Siphiwe Mthimkhulu, Topsy Madaka and disappearance of Mobs Gqirhana and Popy
Magwaca, there is still a need to close this painful chapter. There are many
cases where nobody has come forward with information about the disappeared
political activists. The time has come for all those who were involved,
including people who are still serving as members of the South African Police
Service (SAPS) and other law enforcement agencies, to come clean in an effort
to pave way for lasting peace and reconciliation in our country," said
Mhlahlo.

In his policy statement, presented on 15 March 2007 at the Eastern Cape
Provincial Legislature, MEC Mhlahlo announced that a database of reparations
and rehabilitation programme of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC)
was being updated for the province by a joint task team comprising the
Departments of Justice and Constitutional Development, Social Development and
Safety and Liaison.
