Eastern Cape MEC for Safety, Liaison, Roads and Transport, Mr Thobile
Mhlahlo, will be the keynote speaker at the Walter Sisulu University 2nd
graduation ceremony on Friday, 18 May 2007 at 09h00 to be held at the
institution's Great Hall in Mthatha. This session will be conferring degrees
and awarding certificates in the following faculties:
* Science, Engineering and Technology
* Education
Walter Sisulu University is a strategic partner of the Department of Roads
and Transport and 23 students have received bursaries from the department to
study engineering at the university since 2003. In an effort to encourage rural
learners to massively participate in Mathematics and Science in order to
benefit from our bursary scheme and other opportunities within the transport
sector, 150 learners from the King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipal area are already
benefiting in our Maths and Science Project, which the department is running in
partnership with the university in Mthatha.
With the strategic importance of skills in the fields of science,
engineering and technology, MEC Mhlahlo is expected to address the graduates
about the importance of their contribution in pursuit of the Provincial Growth
and Development Plan targets the Millennium Development Goals which seek to
ensure that government halves poverty by 2014, the Accelerated and Shared
Growth Initiatuve for South Africa (AsgiSA) and Joint Initiative on Priority
Skills Acquisition. He will further touch on the importance of the graduates'
contribution to the 2010 FIFA World Cup preparations in terms of infrastructure
development.
After this ceremony, MEC Mhlahlo will meet three transport experts from
Germany, who have been in the province since Monday to assist us in our
preparations for 2010 FIFA World Cup. These experts are expected to brief the
MEC about their own observations of the Eastern Cape public transport system in
Mthatha at 12h00.
