President Thabo Mbeki chaired the Presidential Trade Union Working Group at
the Union Buildings today.
The meeting discussed ongoing work being undertaken by the Government-Trade
Union task team agreed to in March this year.
On its inception, the task team was tasked to engage in a detailed study on
the challenges and opportunities facing workers and unions, globalisation and
changing methods of work organisation, globalisation and its impact on the
labour market and union movement, role of labour in managing the impact of
globalisation and the role of the state in dealing with challenges of
globalisation.
Both parties agreed to speed up the task team's work and to present a report
at the next Working Group meeting.
Labour made a presentation on its views on Employment Targeting and Monetary
Policy. As a result, it was agreed that discussion on these issues would
continue.
