T Mbeki on Soweto Gospel Choir Grammy Award

Grammy Award to the Soweto Gospel Choir

12 February 2007

President Thabo Mbeki, on behalf of the people and Government of South
Africa, congratulates the Soweto Gospel Choir on receiving a prestigious Grammy
Award for their CD, "Blessed," in the Best Traditional World Music
Category.

The Choir received the award at the 49th Grammy Awards Ceremony held on 11
February 2007 in Los Angeles. Their achievement is yet another testimony of the
richness of South Africa and Africa's contribution to humanity.

The twenty six-member choir has drawn on talent from churches in and around
Soweto. Since their emergence in 2002, the group has performed to critical
acclaim before both local and international audiences. Through their unique
African Gospel music, the choir continues to bring joy to audiences around the
world.

The Choir actively supports several South African charities including Unite
Against Hunger and the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund. Accordingly, President
Mbeki said their involvement in community work was one of the many ways in
which South Africans could express the rich values of Ubuntu.
