T Mbeki responds to P Groenewald on J Selebi

President Mbeki responds to Mr Groenewald, MP

9 November 2006

President Thabo Mbeki today wrote to Freedom Front Plus Member of
Parliament, Mr Pieter Groenewald, in response to the latter's request for the
setting up of a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate allegations
against National Police Commissioner, Jackie Selebi.

In his letter, the President informed Mr Groenewald that it would be
"entirely wrong and absurd to take the serious decision to appoint a Judicial
Commission of Inquiry, acting merely on the basis of rumour and
speculation."

The President also said that no state organ has informed him of any decision
to investigate the National Police Commissioner. The President wrote, "I am
certain that if there was such an investigation, or such an investigation was
contemplated, I would have been informed accordingly."

The President expressed "the greatest of confidence in National Commissioner
Selebi," adding that he was certain that the Commissioner will continue to work
with the diligence, dedication and selflessness he has shown since his
appointment.
