President Mbeki to be conferred with the Honour of Freedom of
the Lukhanyi Municipality

President Thabo Mbeki will, on Sunday, 2 December 2007, receive the First
Honour of the Freedom of Lukhanyi Municipality, at the Recreational Sports
Grounds in Queenstown, Eastern Cape.

In its resolution to honour the President, the Council recognised his
"prominent role … in the establishment of a democratic South Africa [and] the
eminent services [he has] rendered to the Republic…" The resolution affirmed
"the high esteem in which he is held" and accordingly honoured President Mbeki
in "sincere and grateful homage to him".

President Mbeki is the first serving President to receive the Freedom of the
City from the municipality.
