Tshwane: South African President Thabo Mbeki today, Thursday 12 January
2006, on behalf of the government and people of South Africa conveyed to His
Majesty King Abdallah bin Abd al-Aziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia his condolences
following a stampede in Mecca in which hundreds are reported dead and scores
others wounded.
In a message of support President Mbeki said, "please accept the condolences
of the South African government and people following the stampede in Mecca
today, Thursday 12 January 2006, in which hundreds of pilgrims have been killed
and many injured."
"It is indeed tragic that pilgrims who have journeyed far and wide in order
to honour their religious commitment have suffered such a fate."
"Accordingly, we join communities of the world in reaching out to you, the
government and people of Saudi Arabia in thought and prayer during this hour of
grief."
"In this regard, the South African government extends its deepest
condolences to the government and people of Saudi Arabia, families of those who
lost loved ones, while wishing those wounded a speedy recovery," concluded
President Mbeki.
