President Thabo Mbeki, several cabinet ministers and senior government
officials met with the Commercial Agriculture Working Group at Union Buildings,
Pretoria, yesterday.
A presentation on the Joint Agribusiness and Department of Agriculture Forum
for Africa (JADAFA) was made. This initiative contributes to the New
Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) objectives and supports
agribusiness in Africa. The meeting also noted the important role the JADAFA
will play in promoting trade and marketing of South African agricultural
products in other countries.
The working group noted that a strategy is being developed by the Department
of Minerals and Energy to deal with the use of bio-fuels in the country. A
report to this effect will be tabled to cabinet in November where a decision
will be taken on the adoption of the strategy.
On the National Agricultural Research, the Working Group meeting noted the
need for funding for research projects and the importance of building
partnerships with research institutions. The meeting adjourned with both
government and sector partners looking forward to the adoption of the Research
Strategy in the near future.
