T Mbeki meets with Big Business Working Group

President Mbeki meets Big Business Working Group

25 August 2006

President Thabo Mbeki, several Cabinet Ministers and senior government
officials met with the Big Business Working Group in Tuynhuys, Cape Town
today.

The big business delegation made a presentation on its efforts through
Business Against Crime to partner government and other sectors of society in
the fight against crime. The presentation noted progress was made over the last
three years in these efforts. As part of the way forward, it was agreed that
the Department of Safety and Security will as soon as possible convene a
high-level meeting between Business Against Crime, selected chief executive
officers (CEOs) and the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster
(JCPSC).

The meeting will review steps necessary to strengthen the efforts against
crime across the entire "criminal justice system" and ensure that the campaign
is raised to a new level of effectiveness.

The working group meeting also noted work that big business is doing to
realise the objectives of the Joint Initiative for Priority Skills Acquisition
(JIPSA).

For its part, government made presentations on the recently held Group of
Eight (G8) Summit as well as developments in the Democratic Republic of Congo
(DRC); both of which big business appreciated. Both sides expressed confidence
that in spite of the recent upheavals in Kinshasa, the peace and democratic
process in that country would succeed. Government conveyed its gratitude to the
South African business community for the assistance that they rendered during
the elections.
