President Thabo Mbeki today met with the Presidential Working Group on
Higher Education to further discuss matters that pertain to South Africa's
higher education sector's effective response to the challenges facing the
country.
The Higher Education sector led by University of South Africa (UNISA) Vice
Chancellor and Chairperson of Higher Education South Africa, Professor Barney
Pityana, presented a discussion document focusing on the role of the Higher
Education sector in a developmental state. After extensive discussion on Prof
Pityana's presentation, The Presidency made a presentation, for information
purposes and for the purpose of appraising VCs, on the key aspects of the
Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa (AsgiSA).
The Working Group resolved that the tertiary education sector will, before
the end of July this year, present a Status Report on the Higher Education
sector which will give details, amongst others, on initiatives, which the
sector is undertaking to address key challenges which the country is facing as
well as present initiatives that should be undertaken in order to position the
sector to respond better to the challenges.
