meeting
6 November 2007
President Thabo Mbeki will host the International Investment Council (IIC)
at Fancourt, George from 9 to 11 November 2007.
Established in 1999, the IIC draws upon the experience of the distinguished
international business leaders in addressing challenges of economic growth and
development in South Africa. IIC members interact twice a year with the
President, cabinet ministers and senior government officials.
In the past, the IIC has complimented government on a range of issues,
including advice on the implementation the Accelerated and Shared Growth
Initiative for South Africa (AsgiSA), continued improvement in the quality of
education and skills training, modalities of public-private partnerships in
supporting industrial development strategies and the jobs for growth
project.
The Jobs for Growth initiative supports the development of rural production
co-operatives based on the savings of poor rural people leveraged into
investments by the Development Finance Institutions. Council member Percy
Barnevik is one of the drivers of the programme, which is based on a project he
is associated with in India.
