South African President Thabo Mbeki on 27 December 2006 joined the
international community in extending the heartfelt condolences of the
government and people of South Africa to President George W Bush, government
and people of the United States of America following the passing away of
ex-President Gerald Ford on Tuesday, 26 December 2006.
In a diplomatic note, President Mbeki said, "It is with great sadness that
we have received the news of the passing away of President Gerald Ford.
"On behalf of the government and people of the Republic of South Africa, I
wish to extend our deepest condolences to your Excellency, the government and
people of the United States of America, especially to the Ford family and
friends during this time of great sorrow and bereavement."
"The people of South Africa grieve with the people of the United States of
America at this difficult and painful moment. Accordingly, please accept our
deepest sympathies to the government and people of the United States especially
members of President Ford's family," concluded President Mbeki.
