The President of the Republic of South Africa Mr Thabo Mbeki, accompanied by
Cabinet Ministers and the Premier of the KwaZulu-Natal province, Mr Sibusiso
Ndebele, will visit the Sisonke District Municipality as part of the
country-wide Presidential Imbizo programme, intended to strengthen
municipalities' capacity to deliver on their mandate. The Imbizo will mainly
take place at Ixopo and uMzimkhulu, KwaZulu-Natal over two days, Friday, 20 and
Saturday, 21 October 2006.
This drive is part of a number of initiatives within Government's Programme
of Action, to support local government in delivering on amongst others, the
Integrated Development Plans (IDP) and Local Economic Development (LED) as well
as Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa (AsgiSA). It also
intends to enhance public participation in the areas where communities
live.
The Imbizo will directly seek to engage the municipality and stakeholders in
growing the local economy of the Sisonke District. It will also intensify
support to the District through Project Consolidate (a hands-on local
