President Thabo Mbeki will Friday, 6 October, join the Democratic Nursing
Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) in celebrating its ten years of
existence. The celebration, in a form of a gala dinner, takes place as part of
DENOSA's 5th National Congress to be held at the Durban International
Convention Centre, from 6 to 8 October 2006.
The President has been invited by DENOSA, an affiliate of Congress of South
African Trade Unions (Cosatu), to deliver the keynote address. The ten-year
celebration is an important event as it testifies to the fact that South Africa
is indeed enjoying an age of hope that was achieved through struggle.
Ten years ago, when DENOSA was formed, the country was just emerging from
the throngs of apartheid and social equalities which also affected the nursing
fraternity, thus prompting former President Nelson Mandela to say at the launch
of DENOSA in 1996, âWe have great and realistic expectations of DENOSA, and so
does the rest of the country. You dare not let us down.â
The ten-year celebration points to the fact that nurses of South Africa did
not let us down and that the country remains on an irreversible path towards a
better life for all the people, across the racial, class and gender divide.
