President Thabo Mbeki has, on behalf of the people and Government of the
Republic of South Africa, conveyed his condolences to the family of
International Cricket Council (ICC) President Percival Henry Frederick Sonn
(57), who passed away in Cape Town today.
President Mbeki said Mr Sonn will be remembered for his passion for justice,
his outstanding role in the management and unification of cricket. As Deputy
Director of Public Prosecutions and a legal advisor to the South African Police
Service, Mr Sonn served his country and people diligently when he played a part
in fighting crime. He became the first African to head the ICC, where he again
worked tirelessly to ensure that the game of cricket continues to play its
entertaining and unifying role to humanity.
In recognition of his diligence and commitment to excellence, Mr. Sonn has
been rightly described in the cricket fraternity as a "prolific administrator."
For his part, President Mbeki said Mr Sonn embodied the best qualities of what
South Africans are and ought to be.
