President Thabo Mbeki, on Saturday, 6 January 2007, telephonically conveyed
congratulations of the government and people of South Africa to Tanzanian
President Jakaya Kikwete on the appointment of the country's Foreign Minister
Dr Asha-Rose Migiro to the post of UN Deputy Secretary-General.

"The government and people of South Africa join the people of Tanzania, the
continent of Africa and indeed the rest of humanity in welcoming the historic
appointment by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon of Foreign Minister Asha-Rose
Migiro to the important position of Deputy Secretary-General of the United
Nations.

"We are of the view, as surely the world would, that the appointment is an
expression of the confidence that the UN has in the abilities of the people of
Africa in general and women in particular to contribute to international
efforts towards the creation of a better world."

"Accordingly, we remain confident that her experience in foreign relations
matters as Tanzania's Foreign Minister will indeed stand her in good stead in
the execution of her international duties and responsibilities as the UN Deputy
Secretary-General."

"Cognisant of the challenges that lie ahead in this regard, South Africa
joins the rest of humanity in expressing its readiness to offer her its support
in every manner possible towards the success of her responsibilities,"
concluded President Mbeki.
