President Thabo Mbeki arrives in Tanzania for Burundi peace
talks

17 June 2006

Dar es Salaam - South African President Thabo Mbeki, supported by Deputy
Foreign Minister Aziz Pahad, landed a short while ago in the Tanzanian capital
of Dar es Salaam for the Burundi peace talks. In this regard President Mbeki
will be joining the East African leaders including President Jakaya Kikwete of
Tanzania, President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, Facilitator of the Burundi peace
process Minister Charles Nqakula, representatives of the African Union (AU) and
United Nations (UN).

It is anticipated that the current talks may culminate in the signing of the
political and military principles agreement between the Burundi government and
the Palipehutu-FNL, thus paving the way for the Palipehutu-FNL to return to
Burundi as a political party where it will join other role players in the post
conflict reconstruction and development of Burundi.
