T Makwetla to hand over certificates to adult learners, 18 Aug

More adult workers becoming literate in Mpumalanga

15 August 2006

Premier Thabang Makwetla will hand over 1 530 certificates to deserving
adult learners on Friday, 18 August 2006, at Atlantic Stadium in Witbank.

Since the start of the programme in 2001, more than 7 000 adult learners
received their certificates. These certificates are awarded to employees of
government who are general assistants and have successfully completed any level
of literacy from one to four. Competency level four is equivalent to the
current grade 10. This level of competency allows learners to enrol with any
adult learning institution to further their studies on their own.

According to the National Skills Development strategy, the countrywide
illiteracy rate was supposed to be reduced by 75% by 2005. Mpumalanga
Provincial Government, in particular, has played and continues to play its
critical role by reducing the illiteracy rate among its low-level workers.

MECs, Mayors, senior government officials and other important dignitaries
are expected to grace the occasion.
