T Makwetla on arrest of suspects involved in murder of Govan Mbeki
Municipality Deputy Mayor T Mtsweni

Statement by Mpumalanga Premier Thabang Makwetla following the
arrest of suspects allegedly involved in the murder of Former Govan Mbeki
Deputy Mayor Councillor Thandi Mtsweni

3 August 2007

The execution style murder of the Deputy Mayor of Govan Mbeki municipality
just over a month ago was a matter of grave concern to government in the
province. Councillor Thandi Mtsweni was a committed and dedicated public
representative who served her community with loyalty and integrity.

The breakthrough in the police investigation into this murder is a welcome
relief and I wish to take this opportunity to congratulate the Provincial
Commissioner, Commissioner Afrika Khumalo and most importantly the team of
hardworking investigators who spent sleepless nights to crack this case. The
province has in the past witnessed the murders of political activists under
mysterious circumstances without the perpetrators being arrested and
prosecuted. This situation can no longer be allowed to eat into the body
politic of the province, it must stop and it must stop now.

I wish to thank and commend all members of the public who have assisted the
police in this investigation. Other similar dockets must receive similar
attention and I call on all law-abiding and development-thirsty citizens of
this province to take up the cudgel and combat this blight. Let all those with
information about these activities come to the fore. They can provide
information to the police by ringing investigating officers on the following
numbers:

* Senior Superintendent Parker on 082 462 2082
* Captain Manamela on 082 810 2285.

The people of Mpumalanga must experience a better life. It is incumbent on
all of us to collaborate in this mission.

The sun will rise.
