A R15 million agricultural programme is set to boost the lives of people in
Daggakraal and the Mpumalanga Province at large when the Masibuyel' Emasimini
Programme, which is an intervention of the province to roll out a programme for
the aggressive tilling of the land and to get peasant farmer back to the land,
will be launched.
Premier Thabang Makwetla and Madala Masuku, MEC for Agriculture and Land
Administration, will launch the Department's pillar programme at Daggakraal.
The programme is to be used as a vehicle that will get peasant farmers back to
the land for (initially) subsistence and (later) to medium scale commercial
farming to address amongst other social imperatives, poverty eradication and
creation of employment opportunities. The programme entails the provisioning of
assistance in agricultural inputs such as tractors, seed and fertiliser to
facilitate production.
The launch will see the Premier and other MECs visiting various agricultural
projects around the area. Beneficiaries of the Department's support programmes
to the poor manage the projects, which include, Isibonelo Vegetable Project,
Bambanani Community Vegetable, Phezukomkhonto and few backyard gardens. The
beneficiaries are growing among others, potatoes, dry beans, vegetables and
maize.
The backyard gardens are as a result of the supplying of Agricultural
Starter-Packs from the Department. This drive, which form part of the food
security aspect, encourages subsistence farming throughout communities. The
launch, which will serve as, a pilot project will later be taken to other parts
of poverty stricken areas in the province.
