Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) has estimated Gross Domestic Products
(GDP) for each of the nine provinces individually. These estimates are called
the Gross Domestic Product per Region (GDPR) and are available for the years
1995 to 2006, in both current and constant prices. Through current price
estimates, the relative contribution of the various industries to the economy
of the province, as well the province's contribution to the total economy of
South Africa is monitored.
In contrast, constant price estimates are used to monitor economic growth
(both on a provincial and national level). Gross Domestic Product estimates per
province: Contributions and real economic growth:
"In terms of the relative sizes of the provincial economies, Gauteng has
confirmed its position as the largest contributor to South Africa's GDP in
2006, whilst Northern Cape is the province with the smallest contribution to
South Africa's GDP. When reviewing the period 1995 to 2006, the relative
positions in terms of the contributions to GDP remained stable," said Mr Pali
Lehohla.
"When comparing the real economic growth rates of the provinces in 2006 with
2005, Gauteng recorded the highest growth rate of 6,0 percent; followed by
Western Cape with growth rates of 5,9 percent, while Northern Cape recorded the
lowest growth rate of 3,1 percent," Mr Pali Lehohla noted.
The GDPR estimates are preliminary and may routinely be revised.
