The Ministry of Sport and Recreation in South Africa has learnt with sadness
the passing away of Gift Leremi, one of South Africa's best midfielders, last
night.
Leremi's death is not only a loss to his family and his team, Mamelodi
Sundowns, but to the whole sporting nation as well. His contribution to South
African football cannot be wished away and we were expecting even more from him
as we build towards the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Given his current form, we were
hopeful that he would reclaim his spot on the Bafana Bafana line-up.
As South Africa builds towards 2010, gifted players such as Gift Leremi, are
expected to add value to the standard of football on the continent. It is
therefore painful to lose somebody as young as Gift, especially when we are
trying to build our national teams around the youth.
The Ministry shares in the grief of Gift's family, his club, friends, and
the whole sport fraternity.
May his soul rest in peace.
