of Fernando Matola of Black Leopards
6 September 2007
The Ministry of Sport and Recreation in South Africa has today learnt with
sadness, about the death of yet another football player who plied his trade in
South Africa. News about the death of Fernando Matola, captain of the
Limpopo-based Black Leopards, comes when the country is still mourning the
death of Gift Leremi of Mamelodi Sundowns.
Matola's death is not only a loss to his family, his team - Black Leopards,
and his home country, Mozambique but also to the whole sport fraternity.
Although Matola was not a South African, his contribution to South African
football cannot be wished away. For Black Leopards to have made him captain is
an indication that they saw in him a disciplined and committed leader from
which our own South African players at the club could learn.
The Ministry wishes to register its sincere condolences to Fernando's
family, his club, friends, countrymen and women as well as the whole sport
fraternity.
May his soul rest in peace.
