South African Police Service on renewal of firearm licences

Renewal of firearm licences

28 November 2006

The South African Police Service (SAPS) is once more reminding and urging
all businesses to have their firearm licences, permits or authorisations
renewed on or before, 31 December 2006.

All persons born between April and June have until 31 March 2007 to have
their firearm licences renewed. Those that were born between July and September
have until 31 March 2008 to have their firearm licences renewed and those that
were born between October and December have until 31 March 2009 to have their
firearm licences renewed.

However, firearm licence holders may opt to voluntarily surrender their
firearms to the SAPS for destruction purposes, sell their firearms to a
licensed dealer or another person or legal entity, deactivate their firearms
through a licensed gunsmith, or permanently export the firearm.

It must be noted that persons/ businesses who fail to apply for the renewal
of their firearm licences, permits or authorisation before the end of the
stipulated period may be prosecuted unless he or she is able to prove to the
satisfaction of the Registrar that he or she was, for the stipulated period,
unable to renew the firearm licence due to:
* his or her absence from the country
* his or her mental or physical incapacity
* circumstances for which he or she was not responsible, or unable to lodge an
application as required by the Firearms Control Legislation.

“Heed the call and contribute in promoting responsible
