The Policy Advisory Council, established by the National Commissioner Jackie
Selebi early in 2006, met in Durban for a two day workshop on Thursday and
Friday, 18 and 19 January 2007.
Commissioner Selebi's innovative and courageous decision to draw on the
managerial experience and skills of recently retired members of the SAPS top
management should be lauded by all law-abiding South Africans.
The National Commissioner met with a group of former Deputy National
Commissioners, Provincial Commissioners and Divisional Commissioners in May
2006 and gave a briefing on his plans for the South African Police Service. He
enlisted the group's assistance in an advisory capacity in terms of:
* levels of service delivery by the police to the communities
* training and discipline
* management shortcomings.
Fifteen former commissioners, who feel that they still have a huge
contribution to make to policing and the community, responded to his call with
enthusiasm and the Council was formally established in October 2006.
The members of the Council, under the chairmanship of former Deputy National
Commissioner Morgan Chetty, includes one other retired Deputy National
Commissioner as well as retired Divisional Commissioners and Provincial
Commissioners with a range of experience from detective work to financial
services.
The police advisory council has been performing tasks as requested by
Commissioner Selebi for several months. They will meet with the National
Commissioner at least twice annually or as circumstances dictate.
"As a group we are honoured to be in a position, not only to enjoy the
rewards of retirement, but also to be able to use our collective decades of
policing experience to make a positive and constructive contribution towards
the safety and security of the people of South Africa," said the Chairperson
Morgan Chetty.
