South African Police Service to launch Men for Change, 19 Oct

Invitation to 'Men for Change' awareness event presented by the
South African Police Service (SAPS)

18 October 2006

The 'Men for Change' forum was launched by a group of men within the SAPS on
26 April 2006. The men wanted to find a new paradigm that would replace the
existing negative perceptions of the role of men, as traditionally entrenched
in their cultures. The means to do so would be through educational, awareness
and outreach programmes.

Their vision was to provide a model of how to re-create and foster a
community of proud men playing a positive role in their personal lives, in
their communities, and their professional lives in the SAPS.

The 'Men for Change' forum aspires to achieve the following objectives:

* advocating a gender-friendly culture and climate
* preventing the risk of suicide or homicide among police officials
* redefining the essence of fatherhood today
* ensuring a harassment-free environment.

As this initiative has been gaining huge momentum, employees of the SAPS are
keen to learn more about the forum's activities. They will have an opportunity
to do so on Thursday, 19 October 2006 when the awareness event takes place at
the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The key speakers at
the event will include Senior State Advocate, A Raletjena, who will address the
forum on the Sexual Offences Act, and Assistant Commissioner, Dr Nomoyi, who
will brief the men on the incidence of suicide within the SAPS.

Interviews and photo sessions will be granted on request.
