The Women's Network for Corporate Services within the South African Police
Service (SAPS), initiative by Communication and Liaison Services and the
Salvation Army are hosting a Safety Awareness Programme at the Salvation Army
for victims of contact crimes. The Salvation Army (Shelter for Abused Women) is
a shelter that accommodates women who have been abused by their families,
friends, spouses and partners.
One of the objectives of the Women's Network is to make a provision for a
pro-active and reactive support base to women with regard to contact crimes.
Therefore, the SAPS women have put lot of commitment to victims of all contact
crimes (rape, murder, domestic violence, sexual offences and other related
crimes).
Subsequent to that, every victim has the right to apply for a protection
order at the Magistrate's Court or lay a criminal charge at Client Service
Centre (Police Station) of your jurisdiction.
The following are the tips and hints to all victims:
* The victim must have the responsible police official's telephone number so
that he/she knows where to get information about her/his case.
* The police investigate the case and then hand it over to a state lawyer
called a prosecutor. The service is free of charge and available to all. Both
the investigating officer (police official) and the prosecutor will be able to
provide victims with information pertaining to their cases.
Photo sessions will be granted to media only with victims who are willing to
break the silence to the nation; you are requested to consider the fact that
confidentiality is the key.
