South African Police Service to celebrate International Mother Language

International Mother Language Day celebrated by the South
African Police Service (SAPS), Pretoria

Linguistic and cultural diversity represents universal values that
strengthen the unity and cohesion of societies.

International Mother Language Day is celebrated annually on 21 February
under the auspices of United Nations (UN). It promotes the recognition and
practice of mother tongue in order to protect the world's intangible heritage
and rich cultural and linguistic diversity.

The Language Management Section of the South African Police Service, City of
Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality and the Department of Education, are centring
a collaboration seminar to raise awareness on issues pertaining to "mother
tongue" with special emphasis on the historically diminished languages.

Interviews and photo sessions will be granted on request.
