10th anniversary for using the Integrated Ballistic Identification System
(IBIS)
19 April 2007
The media is hereby invited to attend the 10th anniversary of the Integrated
Ballistic Identification System (IBIS) being used by the SAPS Forensic Science
Laboratory. IBIS provides computerised comparisons of fired bullets and
cartridge cases retrieved from crime scenes and test fired ammunition from
exhibit firearms. This highly advanced piece of technology is also a database
which provides infinite investigative possibilities with regard to firearm
related crimes. To date the SAPS system has effected more connections than any
other system internationally. Senior police officers from the SAPS will also
attend the event.
The media is hereby invited, photo sessions and interviews will be granted
on request.
This event is a precursor to the 5th Annual International Forensic
Technology Symposium which will take place in South Africa from 24 to 26 April
2007. This symposium will focus on ballistics technology, especially IBIS
related forensics. International delegates attending the symposium will attend
the event.
