Today two persons appeared in court in Modimolle, Limpopo, on charges
relating to the Protection of Democracy Against Terrorism and Related
Activities Act. The two, Mr Jacobus Bogaards (47 years) and Mrs Elizabeth
Bogaards (49 years) were arrested on Saturday, 13 January 2007.
There are indications that both the Bogaards have been aiding and abetting
fugitives from justice, the fugitives being Herman van Rooyen and Rudi Gouws.
Van Rooyen and Gouws escaped from custody on 3 May 2006. At the time they were
on trial at the Pretoria High Court facing serious charges including treason,
sabotage and murder. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has repeatedly
warned that any person assisting the two would face arrest and prosecution.
The investigation into the escape and the search for the two fugitives
continues. The SAPS once again reminds the community that aiding and abetting
fugitives from justice is a serious offence and - as evidenced by the arrests
over the weekend - the police will take action against perpetrators.
The case against the Bogaards was remanded to Monday, 22 January 2007 for a
formal bail application and they will remain in custody.
