South African Police Service on allegations of torture by SAPS
members

Media statement from the office of the national commissioner of
the South African Police Service (SAPS) in response to the allegations of
torture by SAPS members as reported in the media

23 November 2006

The South African Police Service has noted with grave concern the
allegations of torture of a cash-in-transit robbery suspect in Gauteng, as
broadcast on SABC television last night and published in some newspapers
today.

It must further be expressed that the South African Police Service views the
allegations in a very serious light and already intensive investigation into
the allegations have been launched. However, it must be reiterated that conduct
of this nature, if allegations are proved to be correct, is not only
unacceptable, but also unconstitutional and criminal, and will never be allowed
to find root in our organisation (SAPS).

Members of the South African Police Service are, on an ongoing basis,
receiving training in various fields of policing and detectives in particular
are aware of the legal methods to be used in interrogation and collection of
evidence as well as obtaining information.

Clearly, torture is out of question
