South African Government on suicide bombing at Tel Aviv

Statement on the suicide bombing at a restaurant in the Neve
Shaanan neighbourhood in Tel Aviv, on 17 April 2006

18 April 2006

Tshwane - The South African Government condemns in the strongest possible
terms the suicide bombing at the Felafel Restaurant in Tel Aviv that has left
nine people dead, on 17 April 2006.

The suicide bombing, which follows the bombing of Gaza last week that left
dead more than 15 Palestinians including a baby and a number of innocent
children, are all acts that are counterproductive to peace.

The South African Government has pointed out before the futility of these
acts of violence as it inevitably leads to acts of retribution and retaliation,
fuelling the never-ending cycle of violence.

We stand firm in our belief that no cause can justify the resort to terror
against innocent civilians whether Palestinian or Israeli, as acts of terror
cannot deliver the much cherished peace and security sought by Palestinians and
Israelis alike.

The South African government maintains that the only way to end violence and
acts of retribution is to end the occupation of Palestinian territories, to
marginalise those who are aimed at derailing the peace process and for both
sides to return to unconditional negotiations.
