The South African government will during 7 to 9 June host Ministers
responsible for social development and policy experts from the Southern African
Development Community (SADC) and Latin American countries at an international
conference on Social Protection and Poverty Reduction to be held in Cape
Town.
The conference will take place at the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West
and will be opened by the Minister of Social Development, Dr Zola Skweyiya, on
Thursday, 7 June at 8h30.
Over and above the seven Ministers responsible for social protection in the
SADC and Latin American regions, the Honourable Deputy President, Ms Phumzile
Mlambo-Ngcuka, is scheduled to join the conference on Saturday, 9 June.
The theme of the conference is South-South Co-operation on Social Protection
and Poverty Reduction.
The conference has been organised on behalf of government by the Social
Sector Cluster (co-led by the Presidency and the Department of Social
Development).
"The sharing of expertise with Latin American countries will be beneficial
to South Africa and SADC, as Latin America has done incredibly well in their
poverty reduction initiatives," said Vusi Madonsela, the Social Development
Director-General.
