South Africa to commemorate 1956 Womens March

Commemoration of the 1956 Women's March to the Union
Buildings

28 June 2006

As part of the year-long celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the 1956
Womens Anti-Pass March to the Union Buildings, a number of activities will
continue until March 2007.

In our quest to ensure that the important legacy of the Anti-Pass March is
preserved, government will collaborate with institutions of higher learning to
host a series of lectures on the 1956 Womens Anti-Pass March in the period
between July 2006 to March 2007. The lectures will focus on the lives and work
of some of the veterans of the 1956 march. The first lecture will be held on at
the University of South Africa on 25 July. It will focus on the life and work
of one of our countrys struggle icons, Lilian Ngoyi. Other lectures will focus
on Hellen Joseph, Rahima Moosa, Ruth First, Charlotte Maxeke, Winifred Kgoare
and Ellen Khuzwayo among others.

On Womens Day (9 August), there will be a public event to re-enact and
commemorate the 1956 Womens Anti-Pass March in Pretoria. It is expected that
thousands of people will converge at the Strijdom Square in the Pretoria
Central Business District (CBD) and then march to the Union Buildings.

The marchers will be received by the Deputy President of the Republic of
South Africa, Ms Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka and the veterans of the 1956 Anti-Pass
March at the Union Buildings. They will deliver a petition to the Deputy
President. It is expected that President Mbeki will address the crowds later on
in the day. Full details of the March and programme for the day will be
released in due course.
