international co-operation
22 February 2006
The Department of Science and Technology (DST) through its Overseas
Bilateral Co-operation sub-programme will host a national workshop aimed at
informing science and technology (S&T) stakeholders about opportunities and
funding mechanisms available for use in research and development. These include
Deans of Research at higher learning institutions, Science Councils and
research post graduate students amongst others. The workshop takes place on
Monday, 27 February 2006, at the CSIR International Convention Centre in
Tshwane from 10h00.
Overseas Bilateral Co-operation is responsible for all South Africa's
country-to-country S&T engagements outside Africa. To date, 30 bilateral
agreements have been signed, which have resulted in over 400 research and
development projects in areas such as information technology, environmental
management and manufacturing management.
These bilateral agreements play a huge role in building relations with
foreign countries as well as in sharing best practice. Through these agreements
funds are made available to promote research and development in key areas thus
contributing towards the human capital development agenda.
The workshop will serve as a platform for sharing knowledge and experience
among science and technology institutions on best practices and also explore
ways of addressing the Innovation Chasm through selecting projects that will
have potential for social and economic impact.
All media is welcome to attend the workshop.
