SARS to conduct taxpayer outreach initiatives

27 June 2006

South African Revenue Service (SARS) officials from the Durban office will
be conducting taxpayer outreach initiatives at the Toyota plant near the
airport tomorrow, 28 June 2006.

This follows similar work done by SARS in Richards Bay at the Hillside
Aluminium and Bayside Aluminium plants since Monday. The outreach is aimed at
the working population to explain to blue collar workers what the requirements
are for paying tax, who must register as taxpayers and to prevent large numbers
of workers from visiting SARS offices when they may not be required by law to
register as taxpayers. This phenomenon repeats itself every year.

In order to raise awareness SARS uses industrial theatre in all local
languages to get the message across. SARS also has officials available at these
sites to answer further questions and to assist workers to complete their
returns. In this regard SARS has been working closely with human resources (HR)
departments of various big employees across the country.

Generally the rates at which people are submitting returns are progressing
very slowly. SARS this year issued some 3,4 million returns to individuals and
have received back only 800 000 by Friday. There are about three week left to
the deadline of 14 July to submit returns and it is becoming critical to remind
taxpayers of this through the media.

SARS would obviously appreciate media coverage to further raise public
awareness. By Thursday the outreach activities move to Dilokong Platinum Mine
and SASKO in Polokwane in the Limpopo Province.

The details of Wednesday’s event follow:
