Members of the South African Transport and Allied Workers' Union (Satawu)
are apparently planning to March in Pretoria today. This march has not been
authorised and the South African Police Service, together with our counterparts
from the Metro Police, are already in place to uphold the law.
The only Satawu march that has been authorised will take place in
Johannesburg at 10:00 today and will be closely monitored by the police. All
unauthorised marches will be prevented from taking place.
The South African Police Service has deployed Pretoria Police Members at
strategic points in the city to prevent an unlawful march from taking place and
to protect the community as well as their property. Members of the Area Crime
Combating Unit highly trained in crowd management are also in place and the
elite National Intervention Unit, as well as other rapid response SAPS units,
is on standby.
Any person or group of persons found to be transgressing the law or the
Regulation of Gatherings Act will be arrested.
