Centre & Presentation of Police Trainees
10 March 2006
In a threefold event today in Mthatha, 203 police trainees - including 62
women - successfully completed the first semester of their police basic
training programme and the SAPS Training Institution as well as a Career and
Information Centre were officially opened.
The students received training in Street Survival, Physical Training,
Ethics, Community Policing and Human Rights during these past six months. They
will now progress into 18 months of Field Training at their designated police
stations under close supervision of Field Training Officers. During their
supervision period, the trainees will serve the policing needs of the community
hence allowing them to develop themselves professionally.
To date, the SAPS has enlisted 36 294 entry level constables and 17 650
Public Service Act personnel (civilian employees). These enlistments are in
line with the President's State of the Nation address in 2002, when he said
that the police will enhance its human resource capacity to 168 000 by the end
of March 2008. We currently have a total of 155 320 personnel in the SAPS.
The SAPS training institution as well as a Career and Information Centre in
Mthatha were officially opened this morning. The SAPS Training Institution in
Mthatha is being used for the first time. This establishment was used
previously by the former Transkei Police.
The opening of the Career and Information Centre also marks a significant
milestone. This centre brings the total to ten the number of static and mobile
centres we have established countrywide.
"Top management is satisfied at the significant progress made in the
enlistment and training campaign", said Commissioner Mala Singh, the Deputy
National Commissioner responsible for training and human resource related
matters in the South African Police Service. "We are also satisfied that our
objective in establishing these centres has been met. Members can now plan and
develop their careers while senior grade school learners, recent graduates,
physically challenged people and women have a facility they can make use of,"
added Commissioner Singh.
