SAPS on development of previously disadvantaged

The South African Police Service (SAPS) committed to the
upliftment of development of previously disadvantaged

2 February 2006

The South African Police Service has in its employ personnel who render
functional policing chores and those who render support functions.

For an applicant to be considered for enlistment in the functional stream,
such applicant must be matriculated, have a minimum of code 08 drivers licence,
enjoy physical and mental health, be between 18 and 30 years and without
criminal conviction. In addition, applicants must be able to read, write and
speak at least two official languages, one of which must be English. Such
applicants will be considered for enlistment in terms of the Police Act and
regulations.

Members performing support services include cleaners, messengers, personnel
attached to food processing, animal husbandry and any other support function.
These personnel are not obliged to meeting the requirements for enlistment as
set out for functional members.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has a responsibility to the
uplifting or the development of these personnel to acquire life skills and/or
to access such education or qualification which they could not obtain through
formal education. To this end the Training Division has an assessment scheme
through which personnel who do not have matric qualification can be assessed
and assisted to acquire a certain level of literacy competency.

Personnel undergoing competency training are exposed to such life skills as
numeracy, literacy and operating a bank account.

We have a duty and responsibility to develop our serving personnel, so that
these persons can access those facilities which were previously denied them
through no fault of their own making.
