Human Rights: A decade of the South African Constitution (Act 108 of
1996)'
24 July 2006
On 28 July 2006 from 12h30 to 15h00, the South African Human Rights
Commission (SAHRC) will be launching a book titled 'Reflections on Democracy
and Human Rights: A decade of the South African Constitution (Act 108 of
1996)'. The book was commissioned by the SAHRC and edited by Professor Nasila
Rembe to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the South African Constitution.
The launch will take place at the Commission's offices in Parktown at 29
Princess of Wales Terrace.
The â10th year review book' examines among others how ten years after its
adoption, has the Constitution become a living document for the majority of
South Africans. It is a reflective book on various key areas of our democracy
and constitutional development, its progress and achievements, challenges
encountered and some of the lessons to be learned for the future. The book
carries 20 chapters which explore key issues such as equality, employment,
land, social security, education, development, political participation,
etc.
Contributors to the various chapters of the book are experts and specialists
in their specific areas of study. The SAHRC will also use the opportunity to
consult with partners and other stakeholders in the field of human rights and
constitutional development on some of the issues raised in the book. In
addition the Commission will consult and source inputs on its strategic
direction.
