Safety, Liaison, Roads and Transport on Bisho Airport upgrade

Bhisho Airport runway reopens

9 November 2007

Bhisho Airport runway has been reopened today for aircraft landing,
following a six weeks upgrade. The upgrade included the installation of the new
Instrument Landing System (ILS), which was bought by the Eastern Cape
Department of Roads and Transport from the United States at a cost of R7
million.

This forms part of the R100 million upgrade of the airport, which is in line
with the Blue Skyway Aviation Strategy launched by the Department 2 October
2006 in an effort to maximise the potential of the Bhisho and Mthatha Airports
and bring new life to the rural airstrips within the province.

Progress made in Bhisho Airport:

The new security road is 70% completed and the adjacent new fence
approximately 60% completed. Control tower has been stripped and new painting
and renovations is taking place. Terminal building for 43 Air School offices
completed.

More than 100 workers from near villages are working, there will be more
workers needed as project progresses. Department of Labour has appointed a
service provider to train workers from the surrounding villagers in all aspects
of construction.

Security lighting repairs have been completed by the contractors. Currently
we have paid invoices to the value of R54 million. ILS installed and flights
from 43 Air School have already started landing.

ILS Antena in Mthatha Airport:

The security perimeter road is in the process of being upgraded.
