The Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Mr Sibusiso Ndebele wishes to announce that
the Director-General, Professor Mandla Mchunu, will step down from this
position with effect from 30 June 2007. Professor Mchunu will however continue
to serve the Provincial Government in managing several strategic projects in
the Office of the Premier, inter alia, the KwaZulu-Natal Alumni and the BBBEE
announced by the Premier in his State of the Province address early this year.
The intention is to strengthen the capacity in these areas in particular and
also allow Professor Mchunu time to attend to his other personal interests.
The Premier has applauded Professor Mchunu's sterling contribution in
enhancing professionalism in the province's public service during his tenure.
Ndebele said Professor Mchunu has laid a strong foundation on which to build a
better and more effective public service in the province. He managed to set up
professional processes, mechanisms and systems, mainly in the Cabinet that have
greatly improved the province's executive decision-making and strategic review
capability towards effective service delivery.
"Professor Mchunu has accomplished what would have seemed impossible a few
years ago by helping create a core cadre of professional public servants that
strive for service excellence in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. His
contribution has been immense and we thank him for it," said Ndebele.
On his part, Professor Mchunu thanked the Premier, the Provincial Executive
Council, the Legislature and the public servants for supporting him in his work
of leading the Office of the Premier and heading the Provincial
Administration.
"The level of commitment displayed by all people I worked with towards a
better life for all citizens of KwaZulu-Natal is truly amazing. At this work
rate from the government, I have no doubt that KwaZulu-Natal's economic base
will continue to grow, its tourism sector will flourish and poverty will
significantly reduce."
"It was an honour to serve the people of KwaZulu-Natal in the capacity of
Director-General, in particular the Premier - a man who has come up with so
many inspiring and visionary projects. It's really been an enriching public
administration experience that I will continue to cherish. I leave the position
of Director-General with a deep sense of accomplishment and humility, and am
looking forward to further contributing to strengthening the strategic projects
that I will be tasked with," said Professor Mchunu.
