KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Director of Heritage killed

The Director of Heritage in the Office of the Premier, Mr Thulasizwe
Mngomezulu, 43, was stabbed to death at the corner of Boshoff and Church Street
in Pietermaritzburg. The incident happened around 07h00 on Friday, 27 October
2006. Mr Mngomezulu was returning home from work.

Mngomezulu was a graduate of the Universities of Zululand and KwaZulu-Natal,
holding an Honours degree in Media and Cultural Studies. He taught at various
schools around Durban before joining the KZN Department of Transport as
researcher and speech writer for then MEC for Transport, and now Premier
Sibusiso Ndebele. He had a short stint at the Commission for Cultural Religious
and Linguistic Rights in Johannesburg.

In 2005 he returned to the Province of KwaZulu Natal, joining the Office of
the Premier as Director for Heritage. He played an active role in organising
heritage events related to the Bhambatha Commemorations and Mahatma Gandhi's
Satyagraha. At the time of his death he was tasked with setting up Local
Heritage Forums.

Premier Sibusiso Ndebele has expressed his condolences to family, relatives
and friends. The Premier has noted with sadness that crime knows no barriers.
"Mngomezulu was a fellow who liked conducting quality research and debating
about his findings. He had a good grasp of the current issues in heritage and
made a good impact throughout the Province. We have lost a rising star,"
Ndebele said.

Provincial Director General, Professor Mandla Mchunu, has described the
murder of Mr Mngomezulu as "a tragedy."

Mngomezulu is survived by his wife, Nana, and three young children.
