KwaZulu-Natal
17 July 2007
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sibusiso Ndebele will deliver the keynote address at
the official launch of the of the Ingcugce Commemorative Events on Tuesday, 24
July 2007, commencing at 11h00 outside the Premier's Offices at 330
Langalibalele Street, Pietermaritzburg.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government will be commemorating the iNgugce
regiment of 1876. The main aim of the celebration is to pay tribute to the
heroines of the province through commemoration of the iNgcugce regiment who
fought for gender equality by resisting King Cetshwayo's order to marry
iNdlondlo regiment which led to their massacre. The campaign is scheduled to
run from July until November 2007 and will cover the various districts of the
province.
During this commemoration, the broader contribution of the women of
KwaZulu-Natal to women emancipation will also be celebrated. This campaign will
be used as a foundation to educate women, both young and old, about their
rights and how they can go about accessing these rights.
As part of the commemoration, the provincial gender machinery will also
embark on a Gender Awareness Bus Campaign including door-to-door visits and
dissemination of information. A bus, decorated with slogans on women
empowerment, will travel into the deep rural and farming communities of
KwaZulu-Natal. Aboard the bus will be volunteers (counsellors, social workers,
health workers, taxi industry representatives, legal advisors and so on). The
bus will stop at various points along the route where gender awareness sessions
will be conducted and relevant informational material will be distributed. Door
to door campaigns will be conducted to obtain first hand experience of the day
to day experiences of women, particularly in rural areas.
