Municipality
29 March 2006
The Minister for Provincial and Local Government, Sydney Mufamadi, will
tomorrow, 30 March 2006, visit Greater Taung Local Municipality in the
Bophirima District area after heavy rains, which have left the community cut
off and isolated.
Some 543 houses have been affected in the community of about 182 000 people,
which is located in the South West of Vryburg in the North West Province.
âWe are doing all we can to assist the community with immediate needs. Air
support has been provided to supply the affected people with food and
clothing,â said Mufamadi.
Mufamadi said an assessment on the extent of damage to the infrastructure
will be carried out and assistance will be given from the national government
to rehabilitation of the area.
The Greater Taung Municipality has been declared a local disaster in terms
of the Disaster Management Act, 2002. This allows for the municipality to take
extraordinary measures like road closure to limit the inconvenience of the
rains to the people as well as allocate a certain percentage of the total
municipal budget for dealing with this disaster.
A Disaster Management team is on stand-by in Greater Taung and will continue
to monitor the situation.
