Department of Provincial and Local Government
8 February
The Department of Provincial and Local Government (the dplg) hereby invites
your media organisation to cover the launch of a ward committee handbook and a
resource book for ward committees. This is part of governmentâs efforts to
increase capacity at municipality and community level by ensuring effective
community participation.
Community participation is aimed at including those currently excluded from
access to decision making, through the provision of a functional Ward Committee
system.
As the dplg we have spent a significant amount of time in trying to
understand the specific challenges that the ward committees face. The dplg has
also spent considerable time and effort in putting into place the mechanisms,
through Project Consolidate, that would see a greater enhancement of the
functionality of the ward committee system.
The books are available in two sets, one for ward committees titled "HAVING
YOUR SAY" and the other for municipal officials titled "MAKING WARD COMMITTEES
FUNCTION". These books provide handy hints, practical ideas and guidance for
running a ward committee. They also aim to capacitate ward committee members as
well as communities to participate more in Council decision-making.
Both the handbook for ward committees and the resource book for officials
are developed and distributed by the dplg.
The books will be launched officially by Minister of Provincial and Local
Government Sydney Mufamadi at:
