Minister for Provincial and Local Government, Mr Sydney Mufamadi, will
tomorrow, Friday, 23 March 2007, address the media on the outcomes of a round
table discussion with mayors, councillors and sector departments on the
challenges that hinder the delivery of sustainable infrastructure in
municipalities.
Municipalities are responsible for the delivery of infrastructure services.
Sector departments are responsible for the respective infrastructure policy
development, support to municipalities on regulating of infrastructure in line
with acceptable technical standards and norms.
The round table discussion to be held at Gallagher Estate, Midrand will be
followed by a media briefing at 13h00 at the same venue.
The purpose of the meeting which will be attended by mayors as well as
councillors responsible for integrated development planning (IDP), finances and
infrastructure implementation; MECs for Local Government, Portfolio committee
for Local Government and sector departments, is to discuss:
i. progress and challenges on the acceleration of infrastructure and service
delivery
ii. sector master plans, Integrated Development Plans (IDPs) and sector support
strategies to municipalities
iii. progress and challenges in respect of the utilisation of the Municipal
Infrastructure Grant (MIG) and to intensify support to municipalities which are
experiencing difficulties in spending funds timeously
iv. provinces' role in monitoring and supporting municipalities with regard to
formulating and implementing credible IDPs (project identification, project
registration, feasibility studies, designing, implementation.
The roundtable discussion will also ensure commitment and clarity on roles
for key stakeholders to meet service delivery targets that government has set
for itself; develop a joint commitment to the 5-year Local Government Strategic
Agenda and interventions to enhance infrastructure services delivery. The
meeting will better position the Municipal Infrastructure Grant as one of
Government's tools to accelerate infrastructure service delivery.
