calls and sets a date for an election of all municipal councils
6 January 2006
In terms of section 24(2) of the Local Government: Municipal Structures Act,
(Act No.117 of 1998) the Minister for Provincial and Local Government, after
consulting the Independent Electoral Commission, must, by notice in the
Government Gazette, call and set a date for an election of all municipal
councils.
On 17 November 2005 the local government election date was announced.
Confirming the announced date of elections, the Minister for Provincial and
Local Government has through the Government Gazette of 6 January 2006 set,
called and declared the date of elections for the 1st of March 2006.
This will also assist the IEC to finalise logistical arrangements for local
government elections. Consequently the votersâ roll will also close, meaning
that only those persons who duly registered on the votersâ roll would be
eligible to vote.
