Premier Sello Moloto has accepted the resignation of Mr Ben Mphahlele, the
head of Provincial Treasury, with effect from 1 November 2006. Mr Mphahlele
will be pursuing other interests in his individual capacity. Mr Mphahlele, or
Mokgaga as he was affectionately known by all and sundry, joined the provincial
public service in 1996 as head of the then Department of Economic Affairs,
Commerce and Industry.
"I have served this government with diligence and passion for the past ten
years," he said. "Now it is time for me to move on. Opportunities abound in the
countrys economy and it is opportune for me to try to grab them. The best for
me, naturally, is to do so through joining the private sector."
He was one of the longest serving senior management service staff in the
provincial administration. After joining the Department of Economic Affairs,
Commerce and Industry, he presided over a series of stages of its
transformation, by adding such competencies as environment and merging the
department with the then department of finance. "All of these initiatives," Mr
Mphahlele says, "were informed by our insatiable desire to develop
institutional efficiencies and efficacies."
Premier Moloto commented: "It's indeed regrettable that the provincial
administration has to lose a professional of Mr Mphahlele's calibre. We will
miss his sense of optimism, operational and strategic thinking and the desire
to rise against all odds. He was a distinguished, accomplished professional."
Mr Mphahlele leaves behind a provincial administration that has scored some
remarkable achievements regarding women empowerment.
After appointing Dr Nelly Manzini as the Director-General, the province has
since appointed four women leaders as Heads of Departments of Economic
Development, Environment and Tourism; Sport, Arts and Culture; Roads and
Transport and Health and Social Development. The Provincial Treasury will soon
appoint a person who will serve as an acting head. The position will then be
advertised in the next few weeks.
Meanwhile, also to leave the public service is Saul Molobi, General Manager
for Provincial Communication Services, who has been seconded to Trade and
Investment Limpopo (TIL) with effect from 1 November 2006. "We felt that the
province could derive maximum value out of him as a marketer located at our
provincial trade and investment promotions agency," the premier said. "The
province has to be known all over the world for people to see it as a tourism,
trade and investment destination of choice. And we believe he is the right
person to do that."
Mr Paul Mainganye, currently Senior Manager for Provincial Communication
Services, has been appointed an Acting General Manager until a permanent
replacement has been found.
