celebrated in Thabazimbi
22 November 2006
People from all corners of the province of Limpopo will gather at Thabazimbi
to celebrate the day of people with disabilities. The celebration of the
International Day for Disabled Persons is a further affirmation of government's
commitment to provide a better life for all, including people with
disabilities.
These are the people who are among the most disadvantaged and vulnerable in
society. In celebrating this day together with the rest of the world, the
Limpopo government prides itself in trying to improve the quality of life of
people with disabilities. The government is also aware of the challenges that
lie ahead to do even more than they have done so far. Premier Sello Moloto will
give the keynote address.
The theme for this year is: "Age of hope: Empowering people with
disabilities through equal opportunities. E-Accessibility." This theme calls
upon all citizens to put development objectives and goals around disability
into practical actions. It further calls for the assurance of improvement of
the quality of life for people with disabilities through amongst others
socio-economic empowerment and improved accessibility to e-governance
systems.
The 3rd of December falls within the period of the 16 Days on No Violence
Against Women and Child abuse. The community is encouraged to speak out loudly
against the prevalent abuse of women and children in particular those living
with disabilities.
The Office on the Status of Disabled Persons in the Office of the Premier is
also embarking on the economic empowerment programmes for people with
disabilities. There is for example a programme focusing on the transformation
of old workshops, in the then so called special schools, for people with
disabilities into viable business entities.
